How many people have SISP?

It is hard to estimate exactly how many people have SISP, because those who pick their skin rarely talk openly about it. Recent studies indicate that 2% of all dermatology patients and 4% of college students pick their skin to the point of experiencing tissue damage or scarring and significant distress or impairment in functioning. What this means is that a lot of people engage in this behavior! What used to be thought of as a pretty unusual or rare disorder is now turning out to be pretty commonplace.

About Skin Picking...

Severe skin picking appears to be a way for some people to increase their activity levels when they are bored, or to control their emotions when they are anxious, tense, or upset.
